about

I was delighted to hear that Pipe Dream were recording an album of my father's songs. Having spent a lot of time with Dad whilst he was 'touring' I believe the thing that gave him the most pleasure was other artists appreciating his art. Whether that was recording songs, playing them live, or simply wanting to learn the chords. I believe he perhaps had a romantic notion that at least one of his songs might stand the test of time, long after he was gone. That's why I am thrilled that Pipe Dream have been, and continue to be, massive advocates of Dad’s music. I have seen Pipe Dream play on a few occasions and, as you will hear on the album, you can almost touch the love and passion for the songs. That is magical and I know Dad would be just as thrilled if not more so.

Thank you, Pipe Dream, for your love and passion.
David Carruthers.

I first became aware of Ewen Carruthers in the early 1980’s hearing his great friend, Mike Silver, sing Sailors All at the club. The first time I heard Ewen was on a singers night. He had just moved back to Morpeth and this was to be the first of many appearances he would make at the club. During this time my wife Audrey and I became great friends of Ewen’s and when he moved to America in 1998 to marry Sue, the folk club decided to have a leaving party and he ended up in hospital (but that’s another tale!). Whenever Ewen returned to the UK to visit family and friends , Audrey and I would usually get a phone call asking “Do you have a bed?”, and we would keep Tuesday night at the club free for him. As a songwriter Ewen had no equal and deserved more recognition. He was, in truth, a National Treasure and his music will last forever.

With grateful thanks to Sean Taylor for producing this album and Terry Fletcher for his inventive photography.
